Residents and elected officials will rally Monday afternoon to oppose the proposed natural gas power plant in the Kearny Meadowlands.
The rally will take place Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Leonard Gordon Park on John F. Kennedy Boulevard, which overlooks Koppers Koke Peninsula, the site of the proposed plant.
The 140-megawatt generator, which passed an environmental review in April, is said to “enhance the resiliency of the electricity supply to NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak infrastructure” and to “minimize public transportation service disruptions and facilitate emergency transportation,” according to public agency documents.
The $546 million project is set to begin construction in early 2021. New substations are additionally planned in Kearny and Hoboken, a two-megawatt gas-powered generator in Jersey City, and electrical lines connecting the power plant to railways.
Jersey City Council members, Food & Water Action, Hudson Sierra Club, Coalition to Ban Unsafe Oil Trains, Hackensack Riverkeeper and NJ-08 For Progress will be attending Monday with residents.
